Hey, guys! KK here! I’m 6 hours into The Witcher 2, and thought I’d give you my thoughts so far, since I really am taking too long with this review. Blame it on Assassin’s Creed. Killing Templars is just too much damn fun.

Anyway…

First and foremost, if you haven’t played the first one, do it first! I’d wanted to pick up The Witcher for ages, but never got around to it. When I got the Witcher 2, I just jumped into it. I’m now thinking that might have been a little tiny bit of a mistake. They do their best to fill you in on the story, but I think it’s just too much information to just gloss over.

Can you play without having played the first one? Sure, but I think you’ll enjoy it more, if you don’t. Plus, well… The original is an amazing game. So there’s that, too.

Next topic? Graphics cards. I tend to keep my drivers and all up to date. When the game told me to make sure of it when I installed, I thought nothing of it. I’d literally updated in the last month or so. Yeah. That was another mistake on my part. The game ran, but the lag made it nearly unplayable. Lo and behold, there was an update for my card and once I had it the game ran fine.

One final moan here. I play PC games, but I’m really more of a console gamer. When given the option, I will almost always use a controller. I’m simply more comfortable with one. The game is playable with a controller, but it really doesn’t work that well. I found the original controller set up nearly useless, and there appears to be a few menu glitches that only appear when using the controller. I gave up and switched to the keyboard and mouse.

Really, though, these are all very minor complaints. The game is really a lot of fun to play.

It has an intricate, yet not overwhelming, battle system. You can play in your own style with very little trouble. Whether you want to use a lot of magic or just beat the crap out of it, or anything in between, you can probably do that.

The dialogue is interesting with some space for how you want to make your character react.

And of course, the visuals are amazing. Everything from the characters to the backgrounds looks like it could be from a cutscene.

That’s it for now, but I’ll post some more when I get further in.
