Hitman: Absolution – Attack of the saints trailer is a little worrying

Maybe I’m getting a little cranky in my old age but I found this a little disturbing. Not so much the content, because like all people who grew up in Generation X (well on the cusp of it anyway) I’m totally desensitised to most forms of brutality.

Have a look first then I’ll explain what I found disconcerting.

What disturbs me is the implication that as a gamer, I’m going to be attracted to a product because there are Nuns in sexy outfits with guns; then to really reel me in throw in some brutal hand to hand violence directed towards these women. Now I’m not saying there’s no justification for Agent 47 killing them, clearly they’re trained killers (although I found their footwear was probably a little inappropriate for taking on an extremely dangerous foe) but was there any need for a slow motion headbutt followed by broken nose animation?

Square Enix has never really been about this kind of approach. Sure Hitman is about killing people, and should you choose it can be done in pretty damn brutal ways. But present that as a focal point? This is shock tactics at it’s worst. And I’m playing right into their hands by talking about it. But like the Ghost Recon shenanigans I’m still compelled to say something.

Here’s what I would have done; having the assassins approach in nun’s gear is a masterful stroke, I love the idea of hiding in plain sight. But when they threw off their cloaks they should have been in tactical gear (at least wearing some form of body armour). The weapons were a little OTT but again, I can see the point. Agent 47 is the best of the best so an RPG might actually be warranted. The first couple kills can remain the same, darting in, killing quickly and quietly and appearing between them would also be ok. But keep the hand to hand minimal. Yes he could and should strike the women, they’re trying to kill him but what I’d have liked to see was him using their strength and momentum as a weapon. make them shoot their friends, dodge etc.

It wasn’t far wrong, I just felt this played to the very worst stereotypes of gamers. That we’re violent psychopaths, one bad game of COD away from turning into murderers ourselves.

Do you think I read too much into this? Let us know in the comments below.

I like the trailer and if this type of game play is present in the game. it will make it just that much better. This is the same type of things done in movies. There should not be a difference. Games are becoming more life like, which is a good thing. Just like artist and painters, this is art too and the developers are doing is expressing themselves. If the consumer has a problem with game, just don’t buy it. BUT don’t ruining the experience for other gamers.

Oh I agree, if you object to a game, don’t buy it. And if this is present in the game then, fine. My gripe is with the marketers, because it’s easy to get attention for your new game by putting out something controversial.

Don’t get me wrong. I’m a Hitman fan, always have been but to me the game has always been about stealth. And the content we’ve seen so far has kept that at it’s core. Why the rapid shift?

I actually liked the trailer, not so much for the content as for the quality of it. I love watching trailers, and I’m always amazed by the quality of CGI renders in general. I like trailers for the little pieces of art that they often are (when done properly). But this trailer, aside from the obvious eye-candy, has SOME Hitman essence anyway, the music (even though NOT by Jesper Kyd, sadly), the atmosphere, the ‘silent killing’… I agree the semi-nudity was not necessary, but hey, you’ve got to reel in the horny teenagers somehow, right? ;)

Still, I think (hope??) that the game, once out, will have the option of different approaches to most given situations, both with violence AND stealth. Just like the previous games in the series had. So maybe this trailer is not really the indication the final product, but, like I said, just a little piece of art (AND ‘horny teenager bait’ ;) ) that they produced to keep the people entertained and on their toes until the game finally ships.

I enjoyed the trailer, though I agree the head butt and broken nose were not necessary. But you know the thing is, people never complain about movies like SAW and hostel.
The only thing I can say is, if you don’t like this, don’t buy it and stick with WoW, Diablo 3 or other T rated titles. No offense intended.
